Mumbai. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sent Rohit Sharma, vice-captain of the ODI team, for Khel Ratna. Apart from this, Shikhar Dhawan and fast bowler Ishant Sharma have been recommended for the Arjuna Award. In the women’s section, the board has recommended the Arjuna Award to all-rounder Deepti Sharma.
The performance for this year’s Arjuna Award and Khel Ratna from January 2016 to December 2019 will be considered.
The board also sent Dhawan’s name for the Arjuna Award in 2018. But he was not respected. Indian captain Virat Kohli was given the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2018. Earlier, Mahendra Singh Dhoni received this honor in 2008. Sachin Tendulkar was elected Khel Ratna in 1998, 10 years before him.
Rohit deserves to get Khel Ratna: Ganguly:
Regarding the selection of players for the National Sports Awards, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said – Before shortlisting the names, we tested the players on several parameters. Rohit has set new standards as a batsman. He has achieved such goals in the shorter formats of the game (ODI and T20) which are almost impossible. Therefore, we have felt that he is rightfully entitled to get the Khel Ratna.
‘Continuity in Ishant and Dhawan’s performance too’:
Ganguly further said- Ishant Sharma is one of the most senior members of the Test team. He has a big contribution in Team India becoming number-1 in Tests. At the same time, Shikhar is consistently scoring runs in the ICC event, while Deepti is the best all-rounder.
